We aim to be the heart of performance and creativity in the Eastern Bay of Plenty, where anyone – from first-timers to seasoned performers can find their place on stage or behind the scenes.
Our vision is to grow a vibrant community theatre that inspires pride, participation, and imagination throughout Ōpōtiki and the wider East Coast. To share skills, ideas, and opportunities with local schools, artists, and community groups. To create work that reflects our people, our stories, and our spirit — honest, heartfelt, and uniquely ours.

WHO WE ARE
East Coast Theatre is a community-driven theatre group dedicated to creating quality, engaging, and inclusive theatre experiences for the people of Ōpōtiki and the wider East Coast.
Founded by Dan Gillgren, an experienced actor, director, and playwright, East Coast Theatre is driven by a deep love of the stage and the transformative energy of live storytelling.
With more than three decades of experience in theatre across New Zealand and Australia, Dan has performed in a wide range of productions – from classic comedies like The Importance of Being Earnest and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum to the emotionally charged Harvey and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. His time both on and off stage has shaped his belief that great theatre doesn’t just entertain – it connects, challenges, and inspires.
Based in the beautiful Eastern Bay of Plenty, we aim to produce a variety of performances each year – from comedies and dramas to original local works – that entertain, inspire, and bring people together.
Our goal is to provide opportunities for anyone with an interest in the performing arts to learn, grow, and be part of something creative – whether on stage, behind the scenes, or in the audience. We believe theatre should be accessible to all, and that great storytelling can thrive anywhere, even in a small town.
Each production is made possible through the passion and dedication of our community – our volunteers, cast and crew, musicians, and supporters who make East Coast Theatre what it is. Together, we’re building a place where creativity, friendship, and local talent can shine.
